Thanks so much for this post... I'm on my second day in Vienna, waiting for classes to start and the phrase "what the hell am I doing here" has been running through my head quite a bit. You're definitely right about enjoying the experience- I had a fantastic time walking through the city today- but I think my homesickness will disappear once I start classes and get the chance to meet people. It's tough being in a country where you know absolutely no one and can barely speak the language!

Hey Sarah, one of the most beneficial parts of studying abroad for me was learning to be comfortable with occasionally being uncomfortable/not totally in control. Going for a walk, taking a few deep breaths, and enjoying the surroundings is always a great help, and as I always recommend, step back for a minute and try to think about the awesomeness of the opportunity you have ahead of you!

Been in Spain for about 4 days now and I understand what you mean when you say you felt the "what the hell am I doing here" feeling! I love the culture, and most people have been lovely but when you're eating tapas alone or struggling to understand what people are saying when you're flat hunting I wonder why I'm bothering when I could be home when I'm totally in control. I've tried to just go to the beach or rambla and sit still for a minute and just take in my lovely surroundings. Tends to help!
